Writing

Bean Gilsdorf’s work has been published in Artforum, Art in America, Art Practical, BOMB, Frieze, Full Bleed, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and Momus, among others.

I’ve been writing about art and culture since 2008. My exhibition reviews, interviews, and essays have been published in Artforum, Art in America, BOMB, Frieze, The Los Angeles Review of Books, and Momus, among others. This work has also been cited in recent books such as Conflict, Trauma, and the Media; Landscapes of Liminality: Between Space and Place; Anything But Mexican: Chicanos in Contemporary Los Angeles; and Emancipation's Daughters: Reimagining Black Femininity and the National Body. As a 2015–2016 and 2016–2017 Fulbright Fellow in Warsaw, I wrote about contemporary art where it intersected explicitly with the deprivations of Eastern European Communism and the rise of ultra-right-wing Polish politics. I am a 2020 Andy Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grantee, and in 2021 I guest-edited the final thematic issue of SFMOMA’s Open Space magazine.
