Tapestries, 2015

Partial view at 18th Street Art Center in Los Angeles. There is a fabric sculpture of Ronald Reagan draped loosely on a tripod, as well as a stuffed tapestry of Nancy Reagan, and one of Ronald Reagan.

In 2015, I produced a suite of tapestries from images appropriated from mass-market history books. These tapestries were partially stuffed, warping the images and making them grotesque. They have been exhibited at Alter Space Gallery, San Francisco (2015) and 18th Street Arts Center Project Space, Los Angeles (2018).

A stuffed tapestry of a life-size Ronald Reagan. His image is doubled, sewn to a substrate of three different kinds of blue wool suit fabric, and stuffed so that he bulges grotesquely.

DoubleDouble RR, 2015; wool, polyester, stuffing; 87 x 66 x 12 in.

A life-size tapestry of Ronald Reagan, standing in a tuxedo against a red and yellow background made of wool. The image of Reagan is split so that his right hand dangles from his crotch. The hand is stuffed.

Gladhand, 2015; wool polyester, stuffing; 70 x 94 x 5 in.

An image of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s right arm is sewn to a piece of dark red wall fabric. The hand and arm are stuffed and bulge in a way that warps the image and causes the background fabric to ripple.

Schwarzenegger, 2015; wool, polyester, stuffing; 36 x 36 x 4 in.

A life-size tapestry of Nancy Reagan on deep blue wool. Her face is partly stuffed and bulges grotesquely. Behind her are red and black stripes that reference the American flag. Her left hand holds up the draped hem of her beaded gown.

Ice Queen, 2015; polyester, wool, lycra, stuffing; 66.5 x 33.5 x 4 in.

On a gathered panel of bright red wool, two hands are shown in gestures of prayer and supplication. The tapestry is tied at the bottom with a black velvet ribbon.

Thoughts and Prayers, 2015; wool, polyester, stuffing, velvet; 69 x 34 x 4 in.

On a square of black wool, the hands of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronald Reagan are sewn and stuffed. The hands appear to float in the blackness.

Their Final Roles, 2015; wool, polyester, stuffing; 20 x 25 in.
