Manifest, 2012; mixed-media installation with stop-motion animated video; dimensions variable. Part of Caravanniversary at Headlands Center for the Arts, curated by Brian Karl.
Manifest is an investigation into the iconography of westward expansion and manifest destiny. It combined the physical structure of the covered wagon with a looped self-reflexive video that underscored the wagon as an early engine of progress and empire. Using images appropriated from mass-market American history books to make a frantic stop-motion animation, the "camera" pans down from cloudy skies to the mountains, rivers, and plains below, where frenzied settlers advance across the land, relentlessly moving ever closer to the viewer until they become indeterminate.
